2016 may just be the year of the Burger for Seogwipo. This year has already graced us with Hongdae's 9oz Burger in Shinsaegaji near Emart and 88 Burger near Dongmun rotary, and let's not forget Surf Bar Goofy Foot's classic burger in Jeju City. Opening this Sunday, July 24th, Sum Burger is a hot new contender offering a taste of Jeju fused into this western classic. Previously a food truck patrolling the southern coast, Sum Burger is setting up a permanent location right in the heart of Seogwipo. First, and most interesting, on the menu is the Mal Gogi (Horse) Burger. This tender bulgogi style burger has a wonderful balance of salty, sweet, and savory meat with fresh tomatoes, onions and baby bok choy. Don't let the horse meat scare you away! I promise it will be worth your won. But horse isn't the only popular meat on Jeju.... Second is the Hot Dwaeji (black pork) Burger. Black pork is a well known staple of Jeju Islander's diets and provides another great twist on the 'ol burger formula. Once again the balance of juicy meat, veggies, and bun is great. The sauce is not overtly spicy at all and can be enjoyed even by those who may fear fiery Korean cuisine. I wasn't able to sample all the burgers on my first pre-opening visit, but the other guests seemed very pleased. Sum burger also offers french fries, cheese fries, and chili fries to enjoy with your burger. I applaud these creative crusaders. Everyday it seems another generic cafe or kimbab restaurant opens up. However, these brave women at Sum Burger are breaking the conventions of the mundane. Sum Burger brings a fresh taste to Seogwipo while keeping a nice slice of Jeju tradition in the most unlikely of ways. You can find Sum Burger just across from Cafe Mayb on the bottom of Lee Jeong Seob Art Street. Check the map below. At this time hours are from 11:30-8pm Everyday (Though they may be closing Mondays). 413 Taepyeong-ro, Seogwipo, Jeju-do
